Dog in the Airport

Updated: Feb 19, 2022

It sounds like a wonderful idea to travel with your dog, but they have to get there. How will your dog get on the plane? We hope to answer your questions and quell some possible anxiety you might be feeling.

Going through Security

Before getting on the plane you need to get to the gate. That includes going through security and a long time without having any natural relief areas.

The staff at the security area are usually quite tolerant & friendly with dogs but there a few things to remember. You will need to remove your computer, jacket, sometimes shoes, and even your dog's collar. You will then carry your dog through the metal detector naked then you can put the collar on after it goes through x-ray.

Travelling through Airport

You can walk your dog on leash through the entire airport. Note, dogs are not safe to walk on moving walkways or escalators. Our dog has a big problem with changing surfaces so we can either wait a few moments for the dog to acclimatize to the new carpet or tile or he gets scooped up and carried if we are in a hurry.

Every airport has a dog relief area which is a small stinky area for dogs to pee on some artificial grass. We have visited several and our dog has never actually used the facility. Thankfully we have had no accidents on the plane or in any terminals.

Boarding the Plane

As your gate begins boarding you need to put your dog in the carrier. They stay inside the carrier for the entire duration of the flight. If they are anxious during the flight you can slip a foot into the carrier but we have found it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Upon arrival you may remove them from the carrier but you will have to put them back in the carrier if you are going through customs so they do not interact with the government working dogs.

You can expect a lot of attention as you walk your dog through the airport. Most people are bored waiting for their flight. Hopefully your dog doesn't mind the extra petting as you begin your journey together.
