With spring upon us and summer right around the corner many people are planning their upcoming road trips. With dog ownership rising, here are some tips to help bring your pooch along for the ride.
Restraining Device - A 10 min drive to the store is very different than a multi-hour/day road trip. Having your pet roaming the car can cause potential driver distractions and severe injury in an accident. There are several dog seatbelts to choose from but we recommend a crate. Also, if you are a heavy packer you can stack items on and around the crate as needed.
Don't Leave them Alone - This one is obvious for most dog owners but you cannot leave your dog locked in a car in temperatures over 70F or below freezing. You may come back to your car to find a Good Samaritan has smashed your window to save your distressed pet.
Bring Food - Do not assume that you will be able to find your dog's food on the road. Our dog can get ill if we change food without a gradual transition. Also, you may need to pull over for doggy dinner so having food with you is convenient.
Dog Water Bottle - It is important to keep your pet hydrated. We have found this water bottle very convenient for trips and hikes. It works for water storage and a bowl in one convenient design.
Documents - there is no dog passport but medical documents may be needed to provide proof of vaccination (don't we all?) and health records. Also, if your dog is microchipped you will need the details if they get lost.
Remember that travelling with a dog is different that without. You may not be able to do things the same way or for the same duration as before. Plan your itinerary as pet friendly as possible to keep the whole family happy on your journey.
